Apps To Install After Windows 7

Everyone has a slew of apps they can't live without. I've compiled a list of apps I snag after a fresh Windows 7 install...

  • Firefox - I prefer Firefox, because Chrome doesn't have plugin support yet.
  • Trillian/Windows Live Messenger - I use Trillian for text chat, Messenger for video chat.
  • Twhirl - Best Twitter client, as long as you aren't following too many people. Otherwise, TweetDeck.
  • Notepad++ - Free tabbed text editor with unicode support.
  • Evernote - Instantly saves to the HD as you take notes, typed or handwritten (great for Tablet PCs), and auto syncs up with the web.
  • FileZilla - Free FTP client with resume.
  • Winamp - Still whips the llama's ass! Milkdrop2 is still the most amazing set of visualizations (included).
  • OpenOffice - Free office suite. I install the version without the JRE, since the JRE is mainly used with Base (database app), which I don't use/install. Details here http://download.openoffice.org/common/java.html
  • Foxit Reader - Adobe Reader alternative, even includes a Firefox plugin.
  • VLC Media Player - Quicktime alternative (Update: Pretty soon this will no longer be needed, because Windows Media Player will soon have native support for MOV format!)
  • Sharepod - iTunes alternative. Srsly, who wants iTunes on their Windows comp?
  • 7-Zip - Free compression util.
  • Picasa - By far the best photo organizer out there. The website that the photos sync up with also supports Unicode.
  • Adobe Flash/Silverlight+PhotoSynth - Flash is obvious, but I also need Silverlight for PhotoSynth, Microsoft's photo matching software. Silverlight is now part of the Windows Live Essentials suite, which includes Windows Live Messenger.
  • Mozilla Thunderbird - When I'm not using gmail, I like a simple email client with spam detection.
  • LogMeIn - Best remote connection software available that doesn't require any firewall settings. To get it working on Windows 7, you'll need to follow these instructions.
  • Paint.net - Free image editing software with support for layers. Not as complicated as Gimp.
  • Nod32 - Antivirus. This is the only thing on this list that isn't free, but I just can't stand AVG. AVG is slow, and sometimes it takes an eternity to scan a file while using 100% CPU. Nod32 has saved my butt on several occasions and it's worth every penny.

That's about it. What apps do you like to use on Windows 7?
